The Expedition

Phase 1: Acclimatisation

Teams can spend a few days upon arrival in Durban adjusting to African lifestyle and culture. Explore the city and its many sites of interest such as the Umhlanga Rocks, Hare Krishna Temple of Understanding or uShaka Marine World.

Phase 2: Trek

The 5 day Giants Cup Trail in the spectacular Drakensberg Mountains is a challenging trek which passes rock pools and caves where you will see Bushman paintings. Teams could also choose to trek in Lesotho or the Wild Coast which are similar in length.

Phase 3: Project

In this valuable and rewarding phase teams can volunteer and take part in a variety of environmental and community based projects. Projects are usually carried out in rural schools or orphanages where teams can help with maintenance work, fixing buildings, or general jobs with plenty of opportunity for interaction with local villagers and children. All projects are chosen in consultation with the community to ensure their needs are met. Teams will travel by horseback to projects in Lesotho.

Phase 4: Culture and Review

Hluhluwe Game Reserve (pronounced ‘scha-schlu-wey’) is the oldest existing wildlife sanctuary in South Africa, and home to all of the ‘Big Five’! The Reserve is renowned for bringing back the endangered species of black and white rhino and wild dog from extinction. Around Durban, visit the Phezulu African Village, the crocodile farm in the Valley of a Thousand Hills and Zulu village.
