The Expedition

Phase 1: Acclimatisation

Upon arrival in Borneo the team will spend a couple days acclimatising to the culture and humid climate in Kota Kinabalu. This is a great opportunity to explore the coastal city with its bustling night markets and water front mosque. It is also a good time to start brushing up on your foreign language skills by interacting with the locals.

Phase 2: Trek

Trekking in Sabah is varied both in the range of challenge and the landscape of the trek. Jungle trekking is a highlight of being in Sabah; teams will be able to explore primary rainforests, learn jungle skills and listen to the sounds of the jungle on night walks. Areas such as the Kiau Jungle, Long Pa Sia and the Kiulu Valley offer excellent opportunities for remote jungle trekking. Teams could also chose to follow the more historical Salt Trail trek in the Crocker Range, offering a fantastic insight into the history of Sabah.

Phase 3: Project

In this valuable and rewarding phase teams can volunteer and take part in a variety of environmental and community based projects. Past examples include planting trees and greenhouse construction or working with the community on essential repairs to schools and community buildings. Most teams will be staying with a long house community where they will become immersed in rural village life. All projects are chosen in consultation with the community to ensure their needs are met.

Phase 4: Culture & Review

Teams can choose to explore the city of Kota Kinabalu further, relax on the beach or go snorkelling in the Tunku Abdul Rahman Marine Park. A highlight of the trip is spending time with the endangered, native Orangutan at the Sepilok Rehabilitation Centre. Or experience the spectacular wildlife on a Kinabatangan River cruise where you can explore the Gomantong caves.

Expedition Grade

Our Borneo adventure is graded as challenging or level 4. However we have many trek options from the more easy to difficult giving an overall grade of 3 to 5. The fitter you are the more you will enjoy your expedition.
