Depending on their arrival point, teams can opt to spend a couple of days adjusting to both culture and altitude while exploring the beautiful colonial towns of either Cusco or Lima. In Cusco there are many brilliant museums to visit, whilst the Miraflores district in Lima is well worth a visit.
The main trekking phase takes place high in the Andes, passing through remote villages and mountain communities. Teams can follow the Salkantay trail to the foothills of Machu Picchu or trek through the lush cloud forests of the Sacred Valley. From Arequipa, teams trek into the stunning Colca Canyon following the Colca River.
In this valuable and rewarding phase teams can volunteer and take part in a variety of environmental and community based projects. Projects usually take place in remote mountain communities. Past examples include working with an orphanage, building classrooms, warehouse restoration and reforestation schemes. All projects are chosen in consultation with the community to ensure their needs are met.
No visit to Peru is complete without visiting the mysterious Inca ruins of Machu Picchu. Teams can also choose to visit the floating grass Uros Islands in Lake Titicaca or the Ballestas Islands.
Our Peru adventure is graded as challenging or level 4. However we have many trek options from the more easy to difficult giving an overall grade of 3 to 5. The fitter you are the more you will enjoy your expedition.
